Theology Compromised began as a translation project. In 1910, the German writer Friedrich Naumann published a book of essays on Schleiermacher, with Ernst Troeltsch’s essay on Schleiermacher’s understanding of the churches featuring prominently as its first chapter.
Matthew Ryan Robinson translated Naumann’s introduction to the volume and Troeltsch’s chapter. These are found in English for the first time in the appendix of Theology Compromised, and were the inspiration for our own proposal of a sociological theology.
Schleiermacher der Philosoph des Glaubens is in the public domain, and available through the HathiTrust Library.
